Our Story So Far

Hillside High International School was set up in 1993 as the brainchild of a philanthropic businessman by the name of Wilbrodiz Rugagamu. He gathered together investors with other expertise including finance, project management and architecture to help make his dream a reality. Crucially he also persuaded Mr James Park to join his team as the Headmaster. Mr Park had taught for many years in the UK and East Africa and had also written several educational books including several for the Ugandan schools market. The school opened its doors in January 1994 with a handful of scholarship students from the local community and soon began to grow. Under Mr Park’s dedicated leadership, an ethos of serious learning in a gentle and peaceful environment was cultivated. Many students have passed through the school with excellent qualifications, knowledge and skills. Also they have prospered by displaying the values encouraged by Mr Park which are now embedded in the school’s core values of: Respect, Integrity, Courtesy, Harmony, Empathy, Responsibility As the acronym suggests, students at Hillside are richer for their experience in this lovely school.

Sadly Mr Park passed away in December 2016 after 23 years at the helm but his legacy most definitely lives on. He introduced ladies’ and girls’ rugby to the country and we currently have two U18 internationals within our student population. Inevitably, Mr Park has been a hard act to follow and, along with the Covid pandemic that struck three years later, this has been a difficult period in the school’s 29 year history. However, the foundations remain strong and the spirit of the Hillside Community is still very much glowing. We now look forward with renewed vigour and optimism.

Our Philosophy

At this juncture, it is an appropriate time for the school to reset as it approaches its 30th anniversary

and with the recent difficult times behind us. We are about to embark on a self-evaluation process with the parents, staff and students to formulate our mission and vision. It is safe to say that we will carry on the traditions established by our founding Headmaster with an emphasis on developing the whole child in a safe and caring and respectful environment. We value every child as an individual and aim to identify and nurture their specific skills and talents to achieve their full potential both academic and in other fields. Our values of harmony, respect, empathy and courtesy all aim to be a counterbalance to a world that has become increasingly confrontational and lacking in compassion. Our values of responsibility and integrity show how important we regard honesty and self-dependence.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on the Cambridge International curriculum and philosophy

which encourages students to be responsible for their own learning, confident in understanding and sharing information, reflective in assessing their own performance, skills and abilities, innovative in asking probing questions and coming up with solutions and engaged in a wide range of subjects and activities.

All teachers provide a differentiated and student-centred learning environment in line with progressive teaching orthodoxy whereby students are provided with opportunities to learn according to their ability, needs and preferences thus developing their intrinsic motivation and encouraging them to be life-long learners.

The Future

Bunamwaya is a very different place to when Hillside High School first started educating children in 1994. With the new road network now extended almost to our front gate and the general infrastructure within the area much improved, the potential for Hillside High International School to expand and develop is limitless. Much of our 10 acre site is yet to be developed and we have plans to open a primary school in the near future. The directors are committed fully to establishing the school as a major international day and boarding school within the East African region. With the internet creating a global village where everybody is interconnected, the need for a more skills based and interactive education to prepare young people for the world they will be living in has never been more critical. Memorising and regurgitating facts and information will no longer cut it in the modern world. We very much welcome all parents to come and pay us a visit to see what an education fit for the 21st century looks like.
